On 23rd & 24th August 2008 the Japan Shotokan Karate Association World ChampionShips were held at the Velodrome in Manchester. One student and one instructor from Jacksons Lane Shotokan karate club, based for over 14 years at Hazel Grove Recreation Centre, Jacksons Lane, Hazel Grove, Stockport, entered this prestigious event.
Stephen Palmer, now 6th Dan JSKA, despite having not competed for 16 years, decided to enter for old time's sake. For Kieran McFall, 8 years, this was his first introduction to a competition of this magnitude. There were karateka from all over the world and standards were very high.
To the great delight of both the participants and all the students at Jacksons Lane, Sensei Steve Palmer won a Bronze Medal in the Team Kumite (Fighting) and a Bronze Medal in the Team Kata in his group.
For Kieran there was the added joy of winning the Gold Medal in the one step Kumite in his group. To be the world champion at his age is a major achievement indeed.
It is well done all round for the competitors and a thank you for all the support from family and friends, fellow club members, instructors and students alike, and from the excellent staff at the Recreation Centre who have helped and supported the club for all these years.
Next World Championships are to be held in PortugaL Now that is something else to look forward to. .
